Natural breath fresheners can come in many forms like gum, lozenges, or sprays. The key ingredients that make up any natural breath freshener should be just that—natural. Free of synthetic additives, chemicals or sweeteners. All of which can be found in some traditional breath fresheners.
Peppermint or other mint oils are key ingredients and are often used in natural breath fresheners. Mint is naturally antibacterial and has been used for centuries to treat many types of infection throughout the body. The bacteria inside the mouth can be eliminated well with mint oils. Regular use of oils like peppermint and spearmint can help prevent the overall growth of bacteria as well and may benefit your mouth and body by eliminating unnecessary chemicals or upsetting the balance of your mouth. Other natural odor fighters like clove or cinnamon may also be found in some breath freshening preparations.
Often traditional treatments for bad breath can contain alcohol or other additives that only mask bad breath or change the environment inside the mouth so dramatically that bad breath is actually worse in the end. The mint flavoring added to traditional breath freshener may not actually contain any real mint and only fools you into believing that you are helping your mouth and your breath when really you are not.
Most types of breath fresheners contain chemicals that simply are not necessary or effective at removing the source of the odors—the bacteria. If they do remove bacteria it is usually a temporary fix. Mouthwashes that are used to freshen the breath often contain high amounts of alcohol. This alcohol dries out the tissues inside the mouth and as bacteria continue to grow they can’t be washed away with saliva and this intensifies their odor, making your bad breath worse than when you started.
Natural breath fresheners are a wise choice in your fight against bad breath. Eliminating chemicals and additives is good for not only your mouth but your entire body.
